  Chapter 1

Cailynn James pulled her car into the parking lot at Three Pines Veterinary Clinic located just outside of Hardwick Bay, Ontario. There was no one else at the clinic yet, but that was fine with her. This was the first day of her new job, in a new town, and hopefully, part of a new life. She had planned to be a bit early. She wanted to show the clinic she was eager and reliable right from the start.

She was excited to have this new job. She had been living in a larger city but was unable to find full-time work as a veterinary technician. She did some shifts at a local emergency clinic, which was great because she got to use a lot of her skills, but they didn’t have a full-time spot for her. To make ends meet, she had been working at a big-box hardware store as a clerk. Telling people where to find paint and three-inch nails was just not her passion in life.

As it turned out, neither was Martin Long, her ex-boyfriend. She had been with him for a couple of years but realized the harder she worked, the lazier he got. Things had started out well enough between them. He seemed caring and attentive to her, and she thought they had a future together. Over time, he gradually lost interest in her, but not in the material goods she provided. She was working two jobs to ensure the rent was looked after, the groceries were bought, and the bills were paid. Martin worked the occasional odd job and gambled. Oh, and he complained. The apartment wasn’t nice enough, the food wasn’t good enough, and Cailynn wasn’t pretty enough, or smart enough, or sexy enough. She got tired of Martin’s put-downs and endless whining. She wasn’t normally a doormat, but Martin had so gradually worn down her self-esteem, it took her a while to realize what had happened. She realized that Martin was treating her the same way her dad had treated her mom before he left.

She needed to change and get a more promising life.

Amy, Cailynn’s mom, was fairly disinterested in her and Cailynn would have to rely on herself for her future happiness from here on in. Not that her mom was a bad person, she just had other priorities. Cailynn’s dad left when Cailynn was twelve, apparently dissatisfied with his wife, child, and life in general. Amy had a seemingly endless string of semi-permanent boyfriends thereafter. Cailynn’s mom always seemed to be seeking the man of her dreams, only to find another guy who didn’t want the responsibility that came with a family. Even now, with Cailynn out on her own, Amy couldn’t seem to find her happily ever after but kept seeking him. Hence, from a young age Cailynn had learned to rely on herself.

The ad on the Tech News website seemed too good to be true. Three Pines Veterinary Clinic needed a full-time technician who could start quickly. Cailynn thought they must have had dozens of applicants, because the clinic seemed like a great spot to her. It was small, but clean, and very well kept up. It
had good equipment, not the fanciest stuff that the referral clinics had in the city, but more than she expected for a small town. And the people working there seemed really nice. The tech that was leaving had to go and live with an ailing mother in another province, otherwise she would have stayed. The rest of the staff had all been there for a few years at least and had nothing but good things to say about the owner, Dr. Clay Webb, and his associate, Dr. Sharon Dunlop.

When the offer for the job came, Cailynn was ecstatic. Dr. Webb had even helped her find a small apartment in town that she could move into right away. Martin, however, was less than ecstatic when Cailynn informed him she was leaving for a new job.

“I am not following you to some hick town in the middle of nowhere!” he yelled at her. “What the hell were you thinking?”

“You’re not invited to come with me,” she replied. She was relatively calm, considering Martin always made her nervous when he yelled. “I want to use the education and skills I worked hard for. You always said there was no future in looking after stupid animals, but I know you’re wrong.”

“You’re not going anywhere, you stupid bitch. They’ll find someone better than you in a day or two and take the job offer away.” He sneered. “I’ll find you crying here on the couch when I get back.”

Martin had then left for a “guy’s weekend” at a casino. Cailynn felt a little guilty for timing her departure the way she did, but not that much. She had deliberately planned to leave while he was away. As soon as he left, she packed up what was hers in the furnished apartment and left for Hardwick Bay. She had paid the rent to the end of the month, which left Martin two weeks to find a new place to live. She left a note for Martin with this information. She didn’t really want to leave him with nowhere to live, but she wasn’t paying his rent anymore, and she was too scared to confront him directly about moving out. She had told the building supervisor about the situation and asked to have her forwarding address kept a secret from Martin. She just didn’t trust that he wouldn’t show up and wreck her new life somehow.

So here she was in the parking lot at Three Pines Clinic. It was situated just outside of town, with three great big pine trees at the side of the property. There were runs at the side of the clinic so the dogs could be outside on nice days and a big grassy space at the other side. There was a picnic table down near the back entrance that looked like a nice spot to eat lunch.

A big grey pickup truck pulled up with two men and a woman inside. The woman gave the driver a lengthy kiss, and then the other man helped her out. He also gave her a smoking-hot kiss up against the side of the truck. The woman looked over at Cailynn and grinned. She walked over, fanning the blush on her face as the truck drove away.

“Hi there! You must be Cailynn,” she said, still grinning. “I’m Lisa Barber, the receptionist. Sorry we didn’t meet at your interview.”

“Umm, hi,” stammered Cailynn, blushing herself at witnessing the serious lip-locking between the three people.

Lisa laughed. “Those two are insatiable. Sorry I didn’t introduce you. Those two hot hunks of manhood are my husbands, Mike and Craig.”

Cailynn was speechless. Husbands? As in plural?

“I know. Two is not exactly the norm,” Lisa continued breezily. The petite, dark-haired woman walked to the clinic, pulling Cailynn along with her. “But there are a few ménage relationships in this town, so you may as well get used to it. Come on in and I’ll get us started on the day.”

So in short order, Cailynn was in the clinic helping Lisa get the front desk up and running as the rest of the staff showed up for the day. When Hanna Marks, the head technician and office manager arrived, Cailynn got started on her training for her general duties. She would basically be using all of her skills as a tech—monitoring anesthesia and assisting with surgery, treating the hospitalized patients according to the doctor’s instructions, assisting with radiology, running the lab stations, and whatever else the doctors and patients required. She and Hanna shared the duties, more or less, with Hanna doing the ordering of supplies and other managerial duties as well. There was also another tech, Hazel, who was semi-retired. She worked a day or two a week on an as-needed basis. Cailynn was in heaven. This was what she had wanted ever since she had taken co-op in high school at a vet clinic.

Hanna filled her in on the ménage thing that Lisa had alluded to.

“We don’t make a big deal out of it,” she said. “There are a few relationships in town that are two men and one woman. They seem to work well and everyone looks happy. Actually, Lisa always says she’s more than happy. Her men treat her like she’s gold. When you see them together, they’re always looking out for her every need.”

“But how is that even legal?” asked Cailynn.

“Lisa married the older brother and they did a separate commitment ceremony in private afterward is what she told me. I’m not about to judge when they seem so happy together. It’s not something we trumpet to the world, since not everyone understands. I hope it’s not going to freak you out too much.”

“No, I’m okay with whatever makes people happy, I guess.” Cailynn wasn’t quite ready to admit to herself that she found the idea of more than one man intriguing. The only problem was how to find even one man that wasn’t a loser like Martin or her deadbeat dad.

  * * * *

Andrew Harris arrived at the Three Pines clinic slightly early for the four o’clock appointment with his brother’s dog, Ranger. The yellow lab had a run-in with a wire fence. Dr. Dunlop stitched up the laceration thirteen days ago. He seemed to be fine after surgery but was difficult to keep out of the water while the wound healed.

“Hi there, Lisa,” he greeted the receptionist warmly. He and his brother Dan were good friends with Craig and Mike. He and Dan knew about the ménage and actually wanted to find a woman they could share as well.

“Hey there, Andrew,” Lisa responded just as warmly. “You’re right on time, as usual. I’ll go get Cailynn to look after Ranger. You’ll like her.” The last was said with a knowing smile and a wink as she showed him into the exam room.

Andrew could hear Lisa’s voice outside the door as she spoke to the new staff member she alluded to. “There’s a suture removal in exam room two for you, Cailynn. Don’t drool too much.”

Cailynn knocked and walked into the exam room. Ranger trotted over to greet her enthusiastically. “Hi, Ranger” she said, rubbing his head and neck while he wagged his tail enthusiastically. She then turned her attention to his owner and said, “I’m Cailynn, the new technician, and I’ll be taking out Ranger’s sutures.”

“Let’s see how that nasty cut has healed,” she continued, focusing on her job. “It looks great. You must have been taking great care of him.” She squatted down beside Ranger and started working on carefully snipping the sutures away.

“I think most of the credit goes to Dr. Dunlop. And the fact that we’ve been able to keep him out of the water for thirteen days,” Andrew said as he looked at the lovely tech in front of him and tried not to allow all the blood in his body to rush to his dick. He didn’t really succeed. She was quite the vision. She was of average height, maybe five six, with short chestnut hair that was attractively cut to enhance her lovely face. She had dark-blue eyes and full lips that begged to be thoroughly kissed. She was very curvy, with full breasts and real hips like women should have. The pale-blue scrubs she was wearing didn’t hide her lush body, and he eyed her appreciatively while she was concentrating on Ranger’s stitches.

“Here, let me help,” he said, leaning down to steady Ranger, who was more interested in trying to lick Cailynn’s face than get his sutures out. He was close enough to smell her fresh, clean scent. It wasn’t perfume, just her. It also didn’t hurt that being nearer to Cailynn allowed him to get a closer look at her lightly tanned skin in the V of her scrub top. “I’m Andrew, by the way.”

“Thanks,” Cailynn managed to say while concentrating on snipping the suture material in a very wiggly dog.
She managed to make short work of removing them and then gave Ranger some pets and treats. “You are the best dog, aren’t you?” she crooned while rubbing his back, much to Ranger’s delight.

“Food and serious doggie rubs—you’ve made a friend for life,” Andrew said with a grin. “I may not get him back in the truck to go home.”

Cailynn laughed. “Somehow I doubt that,” she said. “I don’t know of too many dogs that actually want to be at the vet clinic. I’m sure he’d rather be at home on the couch with you.”

“He’s not supposed to be on the couch, but Dan lets him sneak up when I’m not home.”

“Labs always find a way to get on the couch somehow.” Cailynn smiled.

“Have you met my brother Dan yet?” Andrew asked, trying to sound casual. He realized that Cailynn might have thought Dan was his lover and he did not want her thinking they were a couple. “He does the tech support for the clinic. He was supposed to bring Ranger today, but got caught up in some dire computer emergency at another business. I’m an accountant, so we’ve managed to get a reputation as the geeky brothers.”

“Oh, uh, no, I, um, I haven’t met him. I guess the computers have been behaving themselves.” Cailynn blushed a little.

That little blush told Andrew he was right about her assuming that he and Dan were a couple. The blush was also damned cute.

“So, how long have you been here?” Andrew wanted to keep her talking to stretch the appointment out a little longer.

“Just a week. It seems really nice here,” she said in a rush. Andrew thought she seemed rather nervous.
